EU policy ‘madness’ may see £1bn in fish wasted

SCOTLAND’S fisheries secretary has warned that without new EU measures as much as £1 billion of fish could be wastefully discarded over the next decade.

Richard Lochhead was speaking ahead of the EC Fisheries Council in Brussels, where the issue will be discussed.

He said discards of North Sea cod, haddock and whiting alone would see £350 million worth of fish being wasted by 2022.

He said: “The disgraceful discarding of marketable fish dead overboard is often enforced on our fishermen by the flawed Common Fisheries Policy. That’s why I have been calling for action to stop this economic and ecological madness.”
