Council dashes hopes for new ‘clean’ coal-fired power station

A COUNCIL has removed its support for a new coal-fired power station in Ayrshire.

Plans for a new “clean” power station at Hunterston were due to be laid out by North Ayrshire Council in its Local Development Plan. But the council voted yesterday to remove all reference to a power station from the planning document.

In November last year, the council objected to specific plans by Peel Energy for a coal-fired plant, and yesterday’s decision effectively rules out any other plans for a fossil-fuel power station in the future.

However, the Scottish Government could overrule the council and approve Peel Energy’s plans.
