World leaders are facing calls for urgent action to limit dangerous temperature rises at the start of a crunch UN climate conference.

The conference is underway in Glasgow with Joe Biden, Boris Johnson, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and other leaders all in attendance.

Air Force One landed in Edinburgh ahead of the summit with Boris Johnson welcoming other global leaders.

Nicola Sturgeon was also meeting with the likes of David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg, with protests also taking place throughout the country.

US President Joe Biden has stressed the opportunities on offer from addressing climate change.

COP26 RECAP: Updates as crunch UN climate conference gets underway

Surangel Whipps Jr, president of Palau, which is made up of more than 500 islands in the western Pacific, has called for radical action to avoid extinction in the archipelago.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme: “We want the people at this conference to understand that we can no longer just talk about it and make baby steps or kick the can down the road. We need to take immediate action.

So what is actually happening at COP26 today?

Heads of state will arrive between now and midday with the opening ceremony starting at 12.

The ceremony will see speeches by Boris Johnson, Prince of Wales, Sir David Attenborough and UN secretary-general António Guterres.

National statements will also be made by heads of states from 1pm.

The Prince of Wales will co-host the Great Green Wall (GGW) session, alongside the President of France and the President of Mauritania, before he joins the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to host a reception for the key members of the Sustainable Markets Initiative and the winners and finalists of the first Earthshot Prize Awards.

In the evening the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend an evening reception to mark the opening day of COP26.

Scotland’s First Minister has said she shares Boris Johnson’s pessimism over the Cop26 climate talks, but urged leaders to “put our shoulders to the wheel”.

The Prime Minister said ahead of the start of the summit in Glasgow that pledges made in the Paris Agreement designed to curb emissions will not have worked.
