The female capercaillie was taken into the care of the Scottish SPCA earlier this month after being found injured in the centre of the village of Ballater on Royal Deeside on 4 May.

It was taken to the animal welfare charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross for treatment.

Colin Sedden, the centre’s manager, said: “This is the first time our centre has dealt with a capercaillie, which is part of the grouse family and is now quite rare. The capercaillie had sustained an injury to her shoulder but thankfully made an excellent recovery after receiving treatment.”

He added: “After less than a week in our care, we released her back at a suitable site in Ballater.”

An SSPCA spokeswoman said: “This week is Scottish SPCA Wildlife Week, which celebrates the charity’s achievements rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured and orphaned wild animals.”
