Andy Murray backs WWF’s Earth Hour ‘switch off’

Tennis’s world number five made the call whilst in Glasgow to compete in the Davis Cup against the United States this week.

Now in its ninth year, the conservation organisation’s Earth Hour unites millions of people in hundreds of countries for what it dubs the world’s biggest call to action against climate change.

This year’s event, which will see landmarks and households alike switch off their lights for 60 minutes, begins at 8.30pm on Saturday March 28.

Murray, who is also a WWF UK global ambassador, said: “WWF’s Earth Hour is a simple but powerful idea.

“It’s a global moment to show we care about our brilliant planet, and want to protect the amazing people and wildlife that depend on it.

“Join me and millions of people around the world, by signing up to switch off on Saturday 28th March.”

WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: “It’s brilliant to get the support of Andy Murray for our Earth Hour campaign. Andy became a global ambassador for WWF last year and we’re delighted he’s encouraging as many people as possible to join him by getting involved, and sending a clear message that people care about our planet and want to see action to protect it.

“2015 is an important year for the environment, with world leaders meeting in Paris in December to agree action to reduce emissions and protect people threatened by climate change, while here in Scotland we’re looking to ensure our climate targets are met. Earth Hour is a great way for people to get on board and say they want to see it celebrated and protected.”

Scottish landmarks already set to go dark for Earth Hour include Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castles, Glasgow’s George Square and the Kelpies.
