Englishman jailed for ‘burgers and Buckfast’ jibe

AN Englishman who accused Scots of having a diet of “burgers and Buckfast” has been jailed for eight months.

Paul Rowell made the racist remarks to a couple in a Wetherspoon’s pub in Livingston, West Lothian.

He approached David Fraser, 46, and his wife Lynne, 50, who were out for a drink on a Saturday afternoon, before shouting at them.

Graham Fraser, prosecuting, told Livingston Sheriff Court that Rowell, 42, said: “He made comments which they perceived as being racist, making reference to them having a diet of ‘burgers and Buckfast’.

The court heard Rowell started shouting and swearing when a member of staff forced him out of the pub.

Minutes later he came back into the bar and followed the employee to a glass washing area next to the bar, where he pushed 100 tumblers to the ground, causing £200 of damage.

Rowell, of Livingston, appeared for sentence yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to acting in a racially aggravated manner and recklessly breaking glasses on October 20 last year.
