Empty Scots homes a 'disgraceful waste'

HOMELESSNESS campaigners have condemned the "disgraceful waste" of having tens of thousands of households lying empty when disadvantaged Scots are struggling to find accommodation.

It is estimated that around 25,000 private dwellings are lying empty across the country, properties which could be put to good use for the likes of families and young couples.

Speaking ahead of a summit today to discuss the issue, officials at Shelter Scotland have called for action, pointing out that it is far cheaper to refurbish empty homes than build new properties from scratch.

Kristen Miller, its empty homes co-ordinator, said: "Empty homes are a disgraceful waste of assets at a time when housing demand outstrips supply."
