Elephant ‘jumboree’ raises £3400 for charities

A CHARITY elephant “jumboree” has raised more than £3400 for vulnerable people in the Capital.

A special auction was held recently, which saw a 30-strong herd of handcrafted elephants individually sold to the highest bidder to raise money for Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Friends Foundation and LifeCare.

On the run-up to the big day, many of the independent businesses in Stockbridge decorated elephants and displayed them in shop windows.

One of the elephants was also gifted to the winner of a children’s competition, which invited youngsters to spot the odd thing out in the shop windows.

The auction, which raised £2895, took place at the LifeCare Centre on Cheyne Street and was well supported by the local community. A raffle on the day raised a further £528, bringing the grand total to £3423, which will be split between the two charities.

Event organiser Eleanor Spens said: “It was a lovely event and great day out for the family.

“I hope this will go some way to allowing the two charities to continue with their great work.”
