Elderly woman dies in Gretna house fire

AN ELDERLY woman has died after being caught in a house fire in Gretna, police said.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead on arrival in hospital after the blaze in Gretna, in Dumfries and Galloway.

She was taken to the Cumberland Hospital, in Carlisle, after being rescued from the fire in a house on Union Road in Gretna.

A Dumfries and Galloway police spokesman said her age has not yet been confirmed.

They said her identity would not be released until her family has been told about her death.

Police and fire fighters are examining the house, but do not yet know what caused the fire to break out.
