The thieves, who wore dark hooded tops with scarves pulled over their faces, broke into the man’s house in Edinburgh’s affluent Morningside area at around 11.30pm last night.
A brief altercation ensued when they entered the man’s bedroom after he had gone to bed, at his home on Morningside Drive near to its junction with Plewlands Terrace.
He was robbed of money and electronic items and left with injuries to his head and hand.
Police have launched an extensive investigation to trace the suspects, who spoke with local accents and looked around 18 years old.
Detective Chief Inspector Martin Maclean said: “Although the homeowner in this case escaped serious injury, this was an extremely frightening experience for him to endure.
“An extensive investigation is under way in an effort to trace the two suspects responsible and I am today urging anyone who may have seen them or anybody acting suspiciously in the Morningside area either before or after this incident to come forward.
“There will be an increased police presence in and around Morningside Drive while officers search the area and carry out door-to-door inquiries.
“Uniformed officers will be visible to reassure the public and answer any questions they might have.
“Anyone who recognises the description of the suspects or has information relevant to our ongoing investigation can contact police on 101 or, alternatively through the registered charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
