Egypt pilloried for new abuses

EGYPT continues to restrict freedom of assembly, torture detainees and try civilians in military courts, Amnesty International said yesterday.

In a report on the human rights abuses during and after the uprising that ousted president Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, Amnesty said Egyptians "deserve to see that their sacrifices were not made in vain, that the machinery of repression is completely overhauled."

At least 840 people were killed and over 6,000 injured in the uprising, and 189 prisoners were killed by guards seeking to put down unrest, the report said.
