The charity which offers free practical, emotional and social support for people affected by cancer around the country, has enlisted the help of rugby players to encourage people to come together for a good cause.

Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day will see friends, families and colleagues create their own events so they can “gather and give” to make a difference for people affected by cancer.

The campaign was launched by Edinburgh Rugby lock Grant Gilchrist, centre Matt Scott and hooker Stuart McInally with Maggie’s Edinburgh visitor Sarah Knox at BT Murrayfield Stadium,

By allowing people to come up with their own event, the charity wants to inspire people to be as creative and original as they like and take part in anything from a table-top craft sale, night of cocktails or card games.

The kitchen table is a centerpoint of Maggie’s Edinburgh and Lanarkshire as a place where people come together to talk and share experiences.

Grant Gilchrist said: “I am delighted to have been able to help launch this fantastic new campaign which will raise vital funds for the incredibly important work that Maggie’s Edinburgh does supporting people with cancer and their family and friends. Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day is an opportunity to get together with the people you care about to celebrate, talk and have fun while also making a difference.”

Maggie’s was founded in Scotland with its first Centre opening in Edinburgh in 1996. Since then, eight centres have been opened, covering all of the major NHS hospitals in the country.

Maggie’s Centre visitor Sarah Knox said: “My Maggie’s journey started nearly 15 years ago when my dad was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The support Maggie’s offered us as a family at that time was quite simply fantastic. The team of compassionate and talented individuals offered support and guidance throughout this very difficult time. They also had a natural ability to say exactly what was needed at the right time. They made an impossible situation seem much more manageable and they were with us every step of the way.”

Maggie’s Edinburgh relies purely on donations to keep the centre’s doors open to anyone who needs an extra bit of help, making the involvement of generous individuals even more important.

Funds raised by Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day can make a real difference to people in the Edinburgh area who have been affected by cancer: £30 pays for an exercise class for up to 10 people, £50 pays for a Centre visitor to spend an hour with a Benefits Advisor getting financial advice and £65 pays for one hour of psychological support for a family.
