THE skirl of the pipes welcomed the guests to Edinburgh’s Lord Provost’s BIG dinner earlier this week.
And it was a guest list befitting Edinburgh’s first citizen, with a dozen former Lord Provosts, Provosts and Baillies from across Scotland joining Councillor Donald Wilson and the Lady Provost for a very special Edinburgh BIG dinner and Burns Supper.
A special guest was Councillor Lesley Hinds, who was Edinburgh’s Lord Provost from 2003 to 2007. Councillor Hinds is now the city’s transport leader and she held her BIG dinner in one of Edinburgh’s new trams. You can watch the fun she had eating on the move here.
The Lord Provost’s BIG dinner was in the more comfortable surroundings of the Lady Provost’s room in the City Chambers. And as the Lord Provost pointed out, top Edinburgh food and drink companies donated all the produce.
Edinburgh Gin supplied the pre-dinner drinks with beer from Innis and Gunn.
The haggis came from Macsween’s and the steak pie from Crombies. The dessert was a sweet partnership between Scotland and Malawi, with Luca’s ice cream and rice pudding made from Kilombero rice from Northern Malawi.
And there was more. Iain Mellis supplied the cheese, and the coffee was Mzuzu Fairtrade coffee, also from Northern Malawi. The guests rounded off the evening with a wee dram of Glenkinchie whisky.
The Scotland Malawi Partnership, which promotes links between the two countries, supplied the coffee, as well as the flags that adorned the table. The Malawi Kitchen Kilombero rice, supplied by Just Trading Scotland, is the Fair Trade rice which featured in Shereen Nanjiani’s BIG dinner. You can watch her video again here.
