Edinburgh art student designs New York race t-shirt

AROUND 10,000 New York runners are to wear a t-shirt designed by an Edinburgh College of Art student during a race.

Emily Martin won a competition to create a design to be worn by participants in the ninth annual Scotland Run, a 10k race to mark Scotland Week in the Big Apple.

The design incorporates runners’ silhouettes against a backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and the Empire State Building with a tartan pattern woven through it.

Ms Martin, 22, from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and who is in the penultimate year of a four-year degree, wants to specialise in interior textiles.

She said: “The inspiration for the design was to mesh two iconic skylines: New York City and Edinburgh.

“It’s really exciting to think that my artwork will be worn and seen by so many people across the Big Apple as part of Scotland Week.”

Scotland Week was set up by the Scottish Government, VisitScotland and Scottish Development International to promote the country as a place to visit, live, work, study and invest in.

Events begin with Tartan Day on April 6 and ends with a tartan parade in Manhattan on April 14.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “Scotland is a creative nation, known all over the world as a hotbed of artistic talent. The Scotland Run t-shirt is a great way to showcase our up-and-coming designers on the international stage and I look forward to seeing this year’s eye-catching winning entry being worn by 10,000 runners in New York.”
