Dundee pensioner falls through floor into basement

AN elderly pensioner is recovering in hospital falling four feet through a rotten floor into the basement of her home.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the elderly woman’s home in Dalkeith Road, Dundee, last night.

Firefighters used a sledgehammer to remove a broken slab so they could gain access to the foundations near the front door where the woman had fallen into the basement.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said three firefighters and a paramedic had entered the basement and had administered first aid to the elderly woman before she could be rescued.

She said: “She had fallen through a rotten floor at the front door and firefighters had to remove a broken slab that had collapsed to gain clear access. They used a scoop stretcher to move her to ground level.”

The pensioner was taken by ambulance for treatment at the city’s Ninewells Hospital.
