Driver freed after 40ft cliff plunge

A MOTORIST was trapped inside his upturned car for more than an hour after it plunged 40ft off cliffs on to rocks.

The 56-year-old driver of the silver Peugeot 308 suffered suspected neck and spinal injuries.

Emergency crews were called to Cove Bay, Aberdeen, just after 6pm on Wednesday and found the vehicle on its roof on rocks at the bottom of a cliff with the driver trapped in the footwell.

Dave Russell, of Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, said: “He was in a lot of pain. He was just mumbling things and he let out a scream when we moved him, so he was in a considerable amount of pain.”

A team of nine firefighters had to abseil down the cliff face to reach the car and free the driver. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with “non-life-threatening” injuries.
