Fire and rescue personnel were called to the scene of the accident and had to cut both drivers out of the wreckage.

A fire service spokesman said both were taken to hospital, but it is understood the female drive of the Astra was not seriously injured.

The road was closed for about two-and-a-half hours while the wreckage was cleared. Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
