Drink-driver Darren Day put off the road and fined after city crash

ACTOR Darren Day has been put off the road for five years and given a £1,250 fine for drink driving and failing to stop after an accident.

The 41-year-old entertainer, who had earlier admitted the offences, was also found guilty of being in possession of a kubotan, a metal stick-like weapon.

Fiscal depute Neil Allan told Edinburgh Sheriff Court Day had been arrested after falling out of a Mercedes, owned by his wife, near the flat he was renting in the city.

Mr Allan said: "At 3:30am the sound of a collision was heard by a lady who lives in Manor Place.

"She looked out of her window and saw a car approximately 90 degrees off its proper course."

The woman alerted police and the court heard at around 3:45am a vehicle matching the description given was seen and was followed to Balfour Street.

Mr Allan said: "The driver, who turned out to be the accused, fell out of the vehicle, staggered along the pavement into the hands of the police."

Day's defence agent said Day "apologised unreservedly" to the court and his wife as the incident had contributed to their split.
