Drink-drive OAP ordered to wear tag

A PENSIONER caught driving while disqualified after he had previously been banned for drink-driving has been ordered to wear an electronic tag and abide by a curfew.

Thomas Heaney, 75, was banned from the roads after being caught driving with more than twice the allowed drink-driving limit.

But after his wife took unwell while driving last month, Heaney then jumped into the driver’s seat to complete the couple’s journey.

The pensioner was spotted by police officers who had noticed his vehicle had a defective rear light and he was pulled over.

Heaney, who is from Gullane, was spared jail due to his failing health when he appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court yesterday and was banned from the road for a total of six years.

He was also ordered to resit the extended driving test before he is allowed back on the roads.

The pensioner was also ordered to wear an electronic tag and to abide by an 11am to 11pm curfew after he admitted to driving on the A1 while disqualified.
