Two passers-by came to the woman’s aid and she was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with a dislocated shoulder.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: “This was a sickening and opportunistic assault and robbery on a clearly vulnerable woman. We are carrying out inquiries in the local area to identify the person responsible.”

The robber was white, about 5ft and skinny. He or she wore dark trousers and a hooded top.
