Dinosaur models to be displayed at Mini Maker Faire

A TEN-FOOT long “dinosaur” stalked Calton Hill in Edinburgh yesterday – but it was all in a good cause.

The wooden raptor frame is one of a number of dinosaur models that will be on show at Scotland’s first Mini Maker Faire at Summerhall next Sunday, as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

The raptor model was made in Glasgow by MAKLab, Scotland’s first open-access digital fabrication studio.

Dino Lab, at Summerhall, will allow visitors to the event to make their own dinosaurs – it is one of more than 50 exhibits produced by makers from a range of disciplines showcasing their work in a fun, interactive environment.

The show, which brings the 25th science festival in the city to a close, aims to celebrate a diversity of “tinkering, fabrication and invention”. It will showcase the skills of people from Scotland and worldwide. These range from traditional crafts to innovative technologies.

The inaugural Maker Faire was held in San Mateo, California, in 2006. Since then, the movement has grown massively in popularity with community-driven Mini Maker Faires now being held all over the world.

• The Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire takes place next Sunday from 10am-5pm. Tickets cost £2.50 for all ages.
