The fire service had cleared enough debris from the road to allow one lane to open. Traffic has been temporarily bypassed through Musselburgh causing long queues.

A spokesman for the police said: "The car was coming onto the slip road but hit the central reservation. It appears it has flipped onto its side but not completely over.

"There were no injuries and the occupants emerged unaided.

"It has caused a three-quarter mile tailback but as of 10.02am one lane has been reopened and traffic should be starting to move now."
