Objectors to what would become Ardnamurchan Distillery claim the development would industrialise one of the remotest and “cleanest” parts of Scotland.

They argue it threatens wildlife, would create noise pollution and “spoil the tranquillity” of the remote beauty spot, which attracts tourists to the famous peninsula in Lochaber.

Highland councillors will today visit the site of the proposed distillery at the hamlet of Glenbeg, before voting on its future.

The £5 million proposal – which would create the first distillery in the country that is self-sustaining on energy requirements through wood-burning boilers and hydro systems – also includes a warehouse and a visitor centre.

The planning application has received 105 letters of support, but a further 52 from objectors.

Keith Falconer, Adelphi Distillery chairman, said: “We want to take the name of Ardnamurchan to markets all over the world.”
