Daylight attack victim was left to die in crowded street

A MURDER inquiry has been launched after an “extremely brutal and violent” daylight attack on a man in the east end of Glasgow.

Police were called after Kenneth Andrews was left seriously injured following an assault in Dalmarnock Road near the city’s Bridgeton area during a “busy” period of Sunday afternoon.

Mr Andrews, who lived nearby, was found lying in the street in a pool of blood shortly after 4:20pm.

Ambulance crews treated him at the scene before taking him to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. However, he died in the hospital a short time later.

A post-mortem examination on the 41-year-old’s body was due to take place yesterday afternoon, although police are already treating the death as murder.

In the wake of the incident, near Glasgow Green, officers from Strathclyde Police cordoned off a large swath of Dalmarnock Road as forensics investigators combed the area.

It remains unclear whether Mr Andrews was attacked in the immediate area of the street where he was found – close to the Super Cook Chinese restaurant – or elsewhere.

Similarly, the nature of his injuries have not been disclosed, but it is understood he received several stab wounds during the assault.

Police are continuing to study CCTV footage captured in the area and are also carrying out door-to-door inquiries among householders and retailers.

The force has appealed to potential witnesses, particularly any-one who was in a nearby public house or bookmakers, to come forward with any information.

Detective Inspector Allan Burton from Strathclyde Police’s London Road office, urged people in the area to assist with their investigation.

He said: “This was an extremely brutal and violent attack on this man. Officers are carrying out extensive inquiries in the area to gather more information on those responsible. The inquiry team are currently continuing to carry out inquiries to establish the exact circumstances.

“When the murder happened on Sunday afternoon, I have no doubt that Dalmarnock Road would have been busy with both motorists and pedestrians.

“I would urge any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward.”

Dt Insp Burton added: “In particular, I would like to speak to anyone who may have been making their way to or from the nearby Dominion public house or the William Hill bookmakers, as they may have witnessed something vital to this inquiry.”

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said Mr Andrews’ next of kin had been informed and that a full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that the service received a call from police for an ambulance for a man who had been assaulted in Dalmarnock Road on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Andrews was found just yards away from where the body of Brian Faulds was discovered in September. Three men have since been arrested in connection with the 29-year-old’s death.

Anyone with information concerning the death of Mr Andrews is asked to contact London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4600.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
