Date set for inquest into Betty death

A CORONER’S inquest will be held into the death of an Edinburgh woman whose remains were found in woods in Cumbria almost two years ago.

The inquest, set to be held at Carlyle Coroner’s Court at the end of February, will examine the case of Elizabeth “Betty” Brown, whose death detectives are still treating as suspicious.

She was last seen alive on May 28, 2010 on a bus in Nicolson Street. Her remains were found on ­January 18 the following year in woods between ­Longtown and Gretna.

Mrs Brown, 56, is thought to have travelled on the X95 from the Capital to either Gretna or Cumbria to visit relatives.

Detective Inspector Doug Marshall, from Cumbria Police, said it may have been murder.

He said: “It was suspicious Betty ended up in those woods. Someone who knows why may have told a person close to them and we’d appeal for them to come forward.

“Loyalties may have changed or they may feel able now to get in touch. We’ve treated it as a suspicious death which remains unexplained. Betty’s family have found it difficult waiting all this time without any answers. It’s made it hard for them to get any closure.”
