United boss ‘threatened’ on Twitter

Police are probing claims that Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has been abused on Twitter by a Rangers fan.

Mr Thompson, pictured, is alleged to have been described as a “dead man walking” by a user of the social networking site, in the midst of a row over £100,000 owed by Rangers to the Tannadice club.

Since the Ibrox side went into administration last week, Dundee United officials have become concerned they will not receive the money, which relates to income from a Scottish Cup tie played in Glasgow last month. Mr Thompson was also allegedly told by the fan to “watch out”.

The user is also understood to have made derogatory comments about Mr Thompson’s father and predecessor, Eddie, who died after a long battle with cancer.

It is understood police have spoken to Mr Thompson about the alleged abuse, although he has declined to make any comment on the matter.

A police spokesman said: “We can confirm we are aware of the matter and are investigating it.”

Mr Thompson succeeded his father as chairman in November 2008 after the elder Thompson – who became majority shareholder in 2002 – died.

He had previously served as Dundee United’s chief executive.
