The official Edinburgh Trams twitter account reported congestion in the city centre as a result of the incident.

It said: “Congestion in the city centre is due to a police incident and some trams will be terminating at the West End stop, please contact the on-board staff for further information.”

A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams later said the decision to stop trams at the West End was based on the number of police vehicles in the area at the time.

Tram services are understood to be running as normal.

A police spokeswoman was unable to provide any further details in relation to the nature of any police incident.
