Strathclyde police make appeal following sexual assault

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted down a lane just yards from a busy birthday party at a social club.

Strathclyde Police said the woman, 32, was attacked by a man between 12.15am and 1am on Sunday in the lane near Kilfinan Road in Shotts, North Lanarkshire.

Detectives are anxious to trace anyone attending the Bon Accord Football and Social Club, across the road from where the attack happened, which was busy with people enjoying a party.

The woman suffered facial injuries during the attack but did not need to go to hospital. She is said to be “extremely shaken”.

The attacker is white, around 5ft 10in and of medium build. He wore a dark-coloured jacket, blue jeans and a hat. He also had a scarf tied around his face.

Detective Constable Mark Cummings, from Bellshill Police Office, said: “The nearby Bon Accord Social Club was very busy with a birthday party being held there from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning.

“As this is just across the road from the lane where the assault took place, I would urge anyone who attended at the social club who may have witnessed this crime take place, or may have witnessed anyone matching the suspect’s description to come forward to police.”
