Riot police lay siege to block of Kirkcaldy flats after violent attack

More than a dozen officers surrounded the building as they negotiated with their suspect.

Riot police in Fife laid siege to a block of flats this afternoon in an effort to catch the suspect in a violent attack.

Officers surrounded the building in Earn Street, Kirkcaldy, while specially trained police negotiators spoke with the man, who was holed up inside.

At 12:45pm today, police in the area had received a report that a man had been violently attacked in Lawson Street in the town, sparking a manhunt that led them to the block of flats.

A member of the public tipped off the officers that their suspect was armed with an offensive weapon, and specialist units were called in to help.

After securing the perimeter of the flats with more than a dozen officers, police negotiated with the attacker, and he was later arrested.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 12:45pm on Sunday, 21 June 2020, police received a report a man had been attacked in Lawson Street, Kirkcaldy.

“Officers attended and were advised the attacker, armed with an offensive weapon, had run off.

“Officers conducted a search of the area and located the man, within a property, in Earn Street.

“Specially trained officers negotiated with the man and he was later arrested. Enquiries are ongoing.”
