Neighbour accused of Mary Logie murder facing theft charge

A NEIGHBOUR accused of murdering 82-year-old Mary Logie has been ordered to stand trial over her death - and now faces charges of theft and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Mary Logie (82) Police launched a murder investigation on 07-01-16 after Mary Logie was found dead in Leven.

Mrs Logie found beaten to death with a rolling pin in her own home on January 5.

Sandra Weir, 40, of Green Gates, Methil, appeared on petition at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

She made no plea or declaration to the five charges against her during a brief private hearing.

Weir initially appeared in court last week facing a single charge of murder.

Now prosecutors have added a further four charges.

She is now accused of theft, theft by opening a lockfast place, attempting to pervert the course of justice and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Solicitor David Fitzpatrick made no motion for bail on her behalf.

Weir was fully committed for trial and remanded in custody ahead of further dates being set.

Mary’s body was discovered in her home in the Fife town around 8pm on Tuesday January 5.

She had last been seen that morning when she said she was planning to visit shops and a friend in hospital.

Her body was discovered after concerns were raised when she failed to answer her phone.

Mary had lived in her flat in Green Gates for 45 years. Her husband Walter died in 1987, at the age of 56.

Her grown-up sons Derek and Ronald live in England while her daughter Caryl is in Australia.

A devoted churchgoer, Mary attended Leven Parish Church lunches twice a week as well as Sunday services.

Reverend Gilbert Nesbit, of Leven Parish Church, said: “The whole community is shocked.

“I have been the minister here for nine years and she came virtually every Sunday and I would chat to her at the door.

“Mary was friendly and outgoing, a kind lady who was bright and interesting to talk to. People are absolutely stunned.

“There are many church members here who will be alarmed such a thing could have happened within the community at Leven.”

Police earlier said they are “using all resources to bring her killer to justice”.

Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, Local Area Commander for North East Fife said: “I wish to thank the Leven community who have assisted police since the start of this investigation and shown tremendous support for the work that’s being carried out.

“We have spoken with a number of people who have all been extremely forthcoming and willing to help in any way they can.

“Although such crimes are extremely rare for Leven, Mary’s death has had a significant impact on the public and we are utilising all resources at our disposal to bring her killer to justice as quickly as possible.

“In the meantime, our inquiry is ongoing and we will continue to have high-visibility patrols within the Green Gates area for the time being.

“Again, I ask anyone who has information relevant to the murder inquiry to please contact police immediately on 101. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Councillor Tom Adams, chair of Fife Council’s Levenmouth Area Committee, spoke of the shock felt by the community following the murder.

He said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of Mary Logie at this extremely difficult time.

“It’s tragic and there is no doubt that this despicable crime has left local residents shocked and angry.

“But, as is often the case, the community has come together and is not only supporting one another but also the excellent work being carried out by the police.

“I’m confident this support will continue throughout the course of this investigation and I urge anyone who has information that might assist with this ongoing effort to contact police.”
