Man charged after spate of jewellery thefts in a single day in St Andrews

Police said four houses were broken into in the string of crimes.

A 35-year-old man has been charged after a string of housebreakings occurred on a single day in St Andrews.

Four houses were broken into on Tuesday, March 3, earlier this year, and police said “a substantial amount” of jewellery, commemorative coins, and other valuables were stolen.

Houses on Berry Place, Learmonth Place, Crawford Gardens and Priory Gardens were all targeted in less than 24 hours.

An extensive investigation carried out by Levenmouth CID as part of Operation Principle led to a 35-year-old man being charged.

The man will appear at Dundee Sheriff Court today.

Detective Constable Alan Shovlin, from Levenmouth CID, said: "We are delighted that our inquiry has led to an arrest however there is still a considerable amount of valuables, including jewellery and commemorative coins outstanding.

“I would urge anyone who may have information about the location of the outstanding property or who has been offered commemorative coins/ unique jewellery for sale to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 3572 of 4 March."

Launched in Fife in 2017, Operation Principle focuses on “acquisitive crime” - including housebreaking, fraud, bogus crime, and car crime.
