Man accused of Glasgow park rape employed as prison officer

A man accused of raping a woman in a city park is employed as a prison officer, it has emerged.

John McMahon, 24, has been suspended from his job at Shotts jail in North Lanarkshire as he faces charges over an attack on Glasgow’s south side.

A 37-year-old woman was allegedly raped in Queen’s Park on March 30.

McMahon, from Motherwell, made no plea or declaration when he appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Monday.

He was given bail and will appear in court again at a later date.

The Scottish Prison Service said it does not comment on individual members of staff.
