Lockdown cycle thefts soar in Scotland

Bike thefts across Scotland have increased by 28 per cent over the last month compared to the same period last year.

A total of 561 cycles were reported stolen compared to 438 in 2019, according to Police Scotland figures for 28 April-26 May provided to The Scotsman.

The rise has coincided with a big growth in cycling attributed to the lockdown leaving roads quieter, good weather and people being discouraged from public transport.

Some bike shops have sold out of all but pricier models, with queues and appointments systems at others.
Superintendent Ann Bell said: “The extraordinary circumstances we have all found ourselves in as a result of Covid-19 pandemic may have encouraged more people to use bicycles, both to commute and for exercise.

“Prevention is key in avoiding thefts of this nature, and cyclists can take simple steps to make stealing their equipment more difficult.

“We encourage people to treat their bicycles in the same manner as they would any other vehicle - if you’re leaving it outside, for example, during your working day, ensure it is secured with a solid lock and don’t leave items in panniers.”
