Knifeman jailed after bus threats

A DRUNK who terrified three girls on a bus by singing sectarian songs while armed with a Stanley knife was jailed for three years yesterday.

Raymond Andrew Derrick, 29, was sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The court heard in November 2010, he boarded a No 26 bus between Tranent, East Lothian and Edinburgh in a drunken state and started to shout, swear and stamp his feet, frightening three girls, aged 13, 14 and 15.

Prosecutor John Kirk told the court: “He started singing sectarian songs. [He then] stated he would slash people and dropped out of his bag a Stanley knife.”

Mr Kirk said police called to the scene found Derrick to be “extremely drunk”.

Sentencing, Sheriff James Scott said: “This must have been very frightening for the people on the bus, particularly the three children.” He said Derrick had a substantial record for crimes of violence. Sentence was backdated to 16 December.
