Guilty of rape and ‘a danger to women’

A MAN who was yesterday convicted of his third rape was branded “a danger to women” by a judge.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that David Beattie, 38, was out on licence when he raped his 36-year-old victim on 20 November last year at the Clydeside Walkway, on the Broomielaw in Glasgow.

Lord McEwan called for a risk assessment to be prepared on Beattie, a prisoner in Barlinnie. He told him: “You are plainly a danger to women.”

Advocate-depute Douglas Fairley, prosecuting, told the court that Beattie had two previous convictions for rape, in 1993, when he was jailed for three years, and in 2004, when he was jailed for eight years Beattie, who claimed the sex was consensual, was convicted after trial by a majority verdict.
