Elderly woman attacked and robbed in street

Police in Musselburgh are appealing for witnesses to the theft of a shopping bag from an elderly woman yesterday.

The incident occurred at around 3.30pm, when the 78-year-old woman was walking along Inveresk Brae. The first suspect approached the woman from behind and pushed her, causing her to lose her balance. Her shopping bag was then snatched from her grasp.

The first suspect was also accompanied by another man who was riding a bike. Both men ran away in the direction of Newbigging. While the woman was uninjured, she was badly shaken as a result of the attack.

Both suspects are described as white men with short dark hair. They are both around 5ft 8” to 6ft in height and have a medium build. They are both also believed to be in their late 20’s to early 30’s and were wearing a black jackets.

This incident follows a spate of robberies and attempted robberies that have occurred in the Musselburgh area since Saturday, October 4. Police are appealing to the public for information regarding these robberies, as they are causing increasing concern.

Inspector Andrew Harborow said: “This was a despicable robbery of an elderly lady, who would have appeared to be easy prey for these two men.

“While the victim was unharmed, she was left badly shaken as result of this incident. We find this attack deplorable and we are extremely keen to bring these men swiftly to justice.

“This incident is following a series of robberies over the last six weeks and we are increasingly concerned about the number of incidents that are occurring and the potential for some one to be badly hurt during one of these attacks.
