A SPEEDING driver who killed a woman who was crossing the road has been jailed for four and a half years.

Kevin Milne drove at 57mph along the 30mph Beach Boulevard in Aberdeen and passed through an amber light before he hit Dayan Chibor.

The 27-year-old suffered fatal injuries in the incident on April 5 2010.

Lord Uist said the collision occurred because of “deliberate risk-taking” on Milne’s part.

Milne pled guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Sentencing the 25-year-old at the High Court in Aberdeen today, Lord Uist jailed him for four years and six months and banned him from driving for ten years.

In a statement, later published on the judiciary website, Lord Uist said: “Had you been travelling within the speed limit you would not have struck Mrs Chibor, whose husband has no doubt been devastated by her death.

“I hope that the tragic circumstances of this accident will serve as an object lesson to all drivers, but especially young drivers, who think that they can drive at speed without any adverse consequences.

“There is a reason for speed limits on our roads, and that is to protect the public from the dangers associated with driving at excessive speed.

“The number of accidents, especially serious and fatal ones, caused by speed in this part of Scotland is notorious and this case is yet another example of the tragic consequences that can follow from driving at excessive speed.”

Lord Uist said that Milne drove off after the incident but later attended a police station to admit that he was the driver, and he has now expressed remorse and regret at what he did.

As well as banning him from driving for ten years, he said Milne must pass the extended test of competence to drive before he can do so again.
