Death of 10-year-old boy in Perth and Kinross treated as murder

Kane Morris died at the scene in Union Street, Coupar Angus, in the early hours of Sunday while an eight-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident but police are appealing for two potential witnesses to contact them.

Police Scotland said: “Police investigating the murder of Kane Morris, aged 10, in Coupar Angus are appealing for two witnesses to come forward as they may have information that could assist the investigation.

“As a result of the ongoing inquiry, it is believed that two men have passed the property on Union Street around the time of the incident during the early hours of Sunday morning.”

Tributes to Kane have been left near the scene of the incident, with flowers and cuddly toys among the items.

His family released a statement through police earlier this week which described the 10-year-old as “a popular young boy... loved dearly by all”.

Detective Inspector Ross Fitzgerald said: “We believe the two men may have heard a disturbance at around 2.05am on Union Street on Sunday and would urge them to speak to us.

“Our inquiries remain ongoing in order for us to establish the full circumstances of what happened and we continue to urge anyone who hasn’t spoken to us already to do so.

“A 37-year-old man remains under arrest in connection with the incident. An eight-year-old girl who was also injured during the incident remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

“Local officers will also be in the community conducting additional patrols over the next few days as our investigation continues.
