Child porn doctor may be struck off

A DOCTOR caught collecting child pornography on his computer now faces being struck off the medical register.

Douglas Harris, 29, trawled through paedophile websites after working shifts as an orthopaedic surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

A trial at Aberdeen Sheriff Court in 2010 found that Harris had between 1 July, 2004, and 12 December, 2006, taken or permitted to be taken or make 243 indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children.

He was also found guilty, after trial by jury, that, on 12 December, 2006, he did have in possession 371 indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of
children.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service said yesterday that Harris will now face a Fitness
to Practise Panel next week which could see him permanently struck off the medical register.

The panel, which will sit in Manchester between 7 and 9 January, “will inquire into the allegation that, on 14 June, 2010, at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Dr Harris was convicted of the two offences”.

If they find their allegation to be proved they will consider if Harris’ convictions mean his fitness to practise is impaired
