The spokesperson said: “No-one was hurt, and we cannot comment further on individual cases.

“Incidents such as this are very rare in West Lothian schools, with pupils taking part in education programmes to make sure they are aware of the dangers.”

The pupil concerned was given a five day suspension from the school.

The council spokesperson stressed “processes” will be put in place to safeguard pupils in future - but details of what this means in practical terms were not provided.

It is understood the pupil had shown the knife to other pupils in school and that staff were then alerted and police were called.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police responded to reports of a pupil in possession of a knife in a school… on Monday, 23 November, 2020. There was no risk to the public.

“The 13-year-old boy was charged and a report will be sent to the Children’s Reporter.”
