Crews tackle airfield blaze

FIREFIGHTERS fought a huge blaze at a disused airfield, as police warned neighbours to stay in their homes.

Six fire appliances were called to Drem Airfield, East Lothian, at 8:25pm yesterday when the hangar caught fire. A further six-back-up vehicles were dispatched.

The hangar included three cylinders of argon, oxygen and acetylene gas.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: "The cylinders were really hot and we had to be very careful as there was an explosion risk. The fire was over a large area, with the building split into two parts."

The fire was extinguished shortly after midnight.
