Councillors urged to axe housing appeal

RESIDENTS were today lobbying councillors, urging them to drop a planned appeal aimed at overturning a Court of Session ruling against a council decision to allow 400 new homes to be built on land at Newcraighall.

More than 60 people from Newcraighall and Gilberstoun attended a public meeting earlier this week to voice opposition to the development. Last month, Lord Malcolm quashed the Edinburgh Local Plan which said 400 homes should be built on the green belt at Newcraighall.

Edinburgh East Labour MP Sheila Gilmore said: "There's lots of brownfield land in the city which hasn't yet been used up.

"Developers should be looking there first."
