Community News: Windpower firm blows away rivals

AN Edinburgh-based windpower company has become the first in Scotland to install turbines producing a combined 500 megawatts of power REpower UK achieved the milestone last week, and now produces enough electricity in Scotland to power over 120,000 homes, or a city half the size of Glasgow.

The company said new Scottish projects on the horizon include Muirhall, a six-turbine site near Livingston, and Burnfoot Hill, a 13-turbine site in Glendevon.

Wannaburger wants bite of fast food market

The Capital is to get it first "quality fast food" burger bar, after Wannaburger launched its new venture on Queensferry Street.

Proprietor Jon Clemence said the venue was "the first of its kind to bridge the gap between high-priced gourmet burgers and cheaper high streets brands."

He said the new fast food concept has been developed in response to challenging economic conditions, while catering for a more ethically minded, health conscious public.

House music after green light

A MUSIC centre for children is set to be turned into a house after approval by city planners. The Children's Music Centre in Gorgie is known for its distinctive mural depicting a musical tree. A planning application been granted to turn the Angle Park Terrace unit back into a home.

Awards for council staff

COUNCIL workers have been praised for their "dedication and commitment" to the city. Teams and individuals that "put customers first and look after Edinburgh" were honoured at the annual Staff Awards for Excellence at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Dive to meet Santa Jaws

DEEP Sea World is offering 50 visitors a reduced price to do a shark dive over the festive period. The North Queensferry attraction is selling its Shark Encounter dives for 145 -a saving of 30. The aquarium is one of only two in the UK to offer members of the public the chance to dive with sharks.

Telford pupils turn teachers over comms

Telford College is to launch a new Learner Buddy project to allow students to teach lecturers about new and evolving communications technologies. Teams of four students will give presentations to staff on blogs, wikis, Facebook and YouTube, among others. The college's Alex Gunn said: "We want to turn the tables and introduce staff to the application of new technologies and promote multimedia."
