Community News: Late artist's work to bring in £70,000

FOUR paintings worth more than £70,000 by artist Craigie Aitchison are to be auctioned in the Capital.

Aitchison, who died in 2009, was one of Scotland's best-loved artists and the works are characteristic of the style which gave him an international reputation.

They will be auctioned at Bonhams Fine Art Sale tomorrow.

Two of the paintings feature the Bedlington Terriers for which he had a passion.

Don't freeze homeless out

HOUSING charity Shelter Scotland has called for increased efforts to ensure that no-one has to sleep on the streets in sub-zero temperatures.

The charity is asking that nobody is evicted from hostels unless they have somewhere to go. It also wants local authorities to find them suitable accommodation.

Spa listed for salon award

A WEST End spa has been shortlisted for best new salon of the year at this year's Professional Beauty Awards.

Chamomile Sanctuary owner Justine Mitchell said: "This is a fantastic achievement within only eight months of operation. Our fingers are crossed for the final."

Arrival delay figures soar at Edinburgh Airport

The average delay on flights to Edinburgh Airport increased in the period from July to September this year.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority show that chartered flights during that period were, on average, 38 minutes late in arriving, compared with 24 minutes during the second quarter of 2010. Scheduled flights were an average of 13 minutes late, compared to 11 minutes during the second quarter. The CAA found that the average delay had increased at all ten of the UK airports it monitored.

Professor to discuss state of economy

PROFESSOR Bruce Katz will deliver a lecture at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on December 15.

Prof Katz, who is founding director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC, will discuss his vision for the future of the US economy and its implications for the UK and Scotland.
