Community News: Award event seeks young cancer victims

YOUNG cancer sufferers are being sought for an awards ceremony to recognise their bravery.

Cancer Research UK is planning its annual Little Star event and needs Lothians youngsters to be nominated.

A spokesman said: "The progress we're seeing in children's cancer reflects years of research. Cancer Research UK has been at the heart of this."

Primary pupils win two community 'Oscars'

Castleview Primary School children received two awards at a community "Oscars" ceremony.

The first was a Highly Commended in the Community Awards shared with Castleview, St Francis, Newcraighall and Niddrie Mill primaries for their Heritage Trail Studies Project.

They also won the top award in the Partnership Working category with Historic Scotland for their Craigmillar Castle Tour Guides. Headteacher Lindsey Robertson said she was "extremely proud".

Christmas service in aid of veterans

A CHRISTMAS Festival Service is set to take place at a church in the Capital in support of Edinburgh's veterans.

The service, in aid of Erskine which runs a home in Gilmerton, will feature the Cadenza Choir and St George's School Choir.

It will take place at St Cuthbert's Parish Church, on Lothian Road, on December 9.

Doors open at 7pm and the service, conducted by Reverend David Denniston, will begin at 7.30pm.

Entry is free but donations will be accepted.

College scoops learner prize

EDINBURGH'S Telford College is celebrating after scooping the Learner Engagement Award at an annual awards ceremony.

Telford won the award for its "Lighting Up Learning" project.

The ceremony, held by Scotland's Colleges, took place at the Hilton Dunblane Hydro Hotel on Tuesday.

Fifth Welch fish shop open

A FIFTH Welch Fishmongers shop has opened in a building that once housed the Newhaven fishmarket.

The 1000sq ft shop at Pier Place offers a selection of fresh whole fish, filleted fish, shellfish and its own cured, smoked fish - a family recipe that has been used for more than 30 years.

Honour for church project team

THE Edinburgh-based Project Planning Team from Crossreach, Church of Scotland, has been honoured at this year's Scottish Care Awards.

The team was selected from more than 300 entries as the winner of the Care Home Design Award.
