Club defends member rules

MUIRFIELD golf club, the home of next summer’s Open Championship, has insisted it has no plans to let in women members.

The East Lothian course has a men-only membership policy and has come under fresh criticism after Augusta National in the US dropped its ban on women.

Muirfield secretary Alastair Brown reportedly said: “The state of the membership of Muirfield is a private matter for the members to decide – not an issue for the outside world.

Mr Brown insisted that Muirfield’s policy as a private golf club is legal.
