Classmates rally in honour of Ruaridh

Classmates of tragic schoolboy Ruaridh McKay have been invited to attend his funeral later this week.

The seven-year-old, who was a primary three pupil at Sacred Heart Primary, died one week ago today after being struck by a car on the towns Dick Terrace, just yards from his grandparents’ home. The driver of the vehicle, described as a blue 4x4, has been helping the police with their inquiries.

It is understood that Ruaridh’s older brother Owen, who is also a pupil at the school, has requested that his classmates be allowed to attend the funeral, being held on Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Church in Penicuik.

The parents of all pupils from primary five up have been sent a letter asking if they will give permission for their child to attend, adding: “There is no pressure from school for children to attend. This is very much a decision for you and your child.”

Information on helping children to cope with bereavement has also been included.

Those attending the funeral have been asked to wear something green in honour of Ruaridh’s favourite colour, and green ribbons will be provided by the school to all children. The children will not attend the burial service, and are expected to walk back to school after the Mass.

A book of condolence has also been set up at the school and fundraising has begun for a tribute to honour Ruaridh.

It is understood that trees are to be planted in an area at the top of the school playing field, along with benches inscribed with Ruaridh’s name, to “create a space where children can sit and talk together to remember him.” Donations towards the project can be made at the school.

A celebration of Ruaridh’s life has been planned and is scheduled to take place at the school on April 12.
