City’s Armed Forces Day costs to rise

City council coffers are set to take a hit from the Capital playing host to this year’s Armed Forces Day events.

Council chiefs have confirmed that the event, which received £80,000 of council funding, went over budget, although they have not yet been able to assess the additional cost to the authority.

The financial hit has come from higher than expected infrastructure costs relating to an arena at Holyrood Park that was used for Veteran’s Day, as well as lower than budgeted income from sponsorship.

Despite the overspend, city leader Jenny Dawe said: “The national events, which were broadcast around the globe, will live long in the memory of everyone who came to the city in June.

“Although final figures have yet to be confirmed there’s no doubt the city benefited from a major boost that weekend.”
