City schools to compete in Mandarin speaking contest

TWO Edinburgh secondary schools will compete in the grand final of a Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition run by the British Council and HSBC.

Held at the British Museum in London this Friday, the 90 pupils from 25 UK schools taking part will be competing to win a trip of a lifetime to China. Edinburgh schools George Heriot’s College and Leith Academy will join four other schools from Scotland heading to the event.

Lucy Zhang, Mandarin teacher at Leith Academy, said S6 pupil Brooke Walker will give a solo performance, while the other four girls – Michelle Whitelaw (S3), Immaculate Kahembwe (S5), Sadaf Ashraf (S5) and Jolata Vanate (S6) – will perform a Mandarin-language play.
