City GP who ran to Sahara to promote active lifestyles

A CAPITAL GP who ran from John O’Groats to the Sahara Desert in just 77 days has been recruited by the Scottish Government to promote physical activity.

Ultra marathon runner Dr Andrew Murray will highlight the benefits of being active during a six-month secondment at Holyrood starting next week.

The 31-year-old, who has previously run in the Himalayas and at the North Pole, clocked up an incredible 2659 miles last year – averaging over 34 miles a day – in his Scotland to the Sahara challenge.

Dr Murray said he was “delighted” to take up the new role. “The benefits of staying active are amazing, with evidence consistently showing those that are active live longer, function better, and have a much better quality of life.

“The key is to find something you enjoy, it doesn’t have to be running. Walking, cycling, dancing, football are just as good, and 30 minutes five times a week is a good start.”
